History: " In 1836, six young women journeyed from Lyons France
to St. Louis, MO. They came at the invitation of Bishop Rosati to
do whatever they were asked to serve their neighbor. The women
experienced severe privation and struggled to sustain themselves.
Language was a barrier also. Upon arrival they were given a leaky
cabin on a bluff in Carondelet overlooking the Mississippi. They
grubbed fields and shared food from neighbors. They began a
school and orphans showed up at their door. As word of their work
spread, other women came to join them." (Book "Anything of Which a
Women is Capable A History of the Sisters of St. Mary in the United
States" Volume 1 by Sr Mary M. McGlone.)
